Loughborough University is proud of its long history as an institution of further and higher education. Thanks to the vision of its founding father, Dr Herbert Schofield, it has been able to grow and develop into one of the country’s top universities.
Throughout its history Loughborough University has built upon its distinctive characteristics. Today it is one of the country’s leading universities, with a reputation for excellence in teaching and research, strong links with business and industry and unrivalled sporting achievement.
That Loughborough now boasts an internationally known and respected university is largely due to the entrepreneurial vision and determination of Dr Herbert Schofield, Principal of Loughborough College for 35 years.
Loughborough University has been named the best in the country for its student experience, the UK’s leading publication on higher education, the Times Higher Education (THE) announced today.
The annual THE Student Experience Survey is based on the views of around 14,700 students from across the UK on a range of aspects of student life, such as the quality of courses, the support available and student accommodation.
As well as claiming the overall top spot, Loughborough was ranked number one in four categories:
- High quality facilities
- Good sports facilities
- Catering for personal requirements
- ‘I would recommend my university to a friend’.
Loughborough Students’ Union was also rated highly, securing second place.

We listen to our students
In addition to academic excellence, our renowned student experience, award winning Students’ Union, sports clubs, societies and community spirit play a big part in why our students are so passionate and proud to be here.
We are committed to providing students with every opportunity to go above and beyond and reach their potential – professionally, academically and socially.
All six of our Times Higher Awards relate to our student experience – we believe there is no better place in the UK to be.
The students’ union
Our Students’ Union plays a key part in creating the Loughborough student experience. It is one of the only Unions in the UK to be owned and managed by the students for the students. It offers a variety of support services, more than 100 clubs and societies and a packed programme of social events.
The fundraising arm of the Students’ Union, Loughborough Rag, is the most successful student fundraising organisation in the country. In 2013-14 it raised £1,411,510 for local and national charities, breaking its own national record.
