Full-time PhDs typically last three or four years, while part-time PhDs last six or seven. However, the thesis deadline can be extended by up to four years at the institution's discretion. Indeed, many students who enrol on three-year PhDs only finish their thesis in year four.

Universities in the UK offer three major intakes for students – September, January and April.

USA

In the USA a PhD can take as long as eight to 10 years, but for most students studying full time, it usually takes five to six years. Students who already have a masters degree in an appropriate subject might find that they are able to complete their PhD in four or five years, rather than in five or six years.

In Australia, a full-time PhD normally takes three years. Some students take longer, but this usually depends on registration and funding arrangements. Part-time PhDs in Australia can take up to six years, but this mode of study isn't normally available to international students.

Australia usually has two intakes, February and July. A few Universities offer multiple intakes in September and November as well. Universities take around 4-6 weeks to process the applications for the July intake Australia

Although PhD programs in Canada are typically designed to last about four years, it is more realistic to expect that you will finish your doctorate in five or more years.
